Louisiana Stands Strong: Ten Commandments to Be Required in All Classrooms!

Louisiana – Schools in Louisiana could soon be legally required to display the Ten Commandments in every classroom, from kindergarten to university. The state House of Representatives passed House Bill 71 with a 79-16 vote, sending it to Republican Governor Jeff Landry’s desk. If signed, all state-funded schools must display the Ten Commandments prominently.

A Moral Code in Classrooms

Republican state Rep. Dodie Horton, who championed the bill, argues that the Ten Commandments are foundational to legal history and will instill a “moral code” in classrooms. “This bill is about bringing moral clarity,” Horton said. The Bible supports the importance of these commandments in guiding moral conduct:

  • Deuteronomy 6:6-7: “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”
  • Psalm 119:105: “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

Legal Battles on the Horizon

Critics, including the ACLU and other civil-rights groups, argue the bill is unconstitutional and violates the separation of church and state. They reference the establishment clause of the US Constitution, which prohibits the government from endorsing a religion. However, supporters lean on the 2022 Supreme Court ruling in Kennedy v. Bremerton School District, which allowed more religious expression in public spaces.

What’s Next?

Governor Landry has yet to confirm if he will sign the bill. If it becomes law, legal challenges are expected to follow swiftly. Opponents urge Louisianans to demand a veto, insisting that public schools should remain secular and inclusive for students of all faiths or none.

Biblical Endorsement

The inclusion of the Ten Commandments in classrooms is seen by many as a return to moral and ethical teachings that are crucial for guiding young minds.

  • Proverbs 22:6: “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
  • Joshua 1:8: “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
